The social work internship program was developed after identifying a need at the university and creating a collaborative and holistic vision to address this need and allow students to feel comfortable receiving support for basic needs. Social Work Interns provide a wide range of bilingual services to address student basic needs. Master's level social work education prepares social work interns to provide services and support that addresses needs at the micro, mezzo, and macro level.
Social work interns are providing crisis management and clinical services, grant support, and case management assistance. Case management assistance allows students that opportunity to receive support in applying for public benefits that include but are not limited to SNAP, Medicaid, WIC, childcare, transportation, housing, scholarships, resources, and general financial assistance. Providing opportunities for social work interns to gain experience in these different areas helps prepare them to work with diverse populations and develop a wide range of skills while also providing much needed assistance to UNM students. The social work internships program aims to support social work students across New Mexico as we currently have established partnerships and affiliation agreements with New Mexico State University, New Mexico Highlands University, and Western New Mexico University. The social work internship program started in the UNM Women’s Resource Center and has grown and is now housed in the UNM Dean of Students Office.
